Fair Fuel UK's Summer Poll - Have Your Say

FairFuelUK are ensuring that politicians don’t push their campaigns to one side by devising a new poll for their followers.

FFUK’s newest poll is on how the general public are affected by the rise in fuel prices in the summer and how that affects their holidays. It also asks about the raising prices at petrol pumps and how aware people are of the government’s plans such as the rural fuel debate scheme and the 3p per litre fuel duty tax hike that was proposed for September.

The last poll taken by FairFuelUK resulted in 35,000 people filling out their poll in just 4 days that was then presented to the OFT (Office of Fair Trading). FFUK are urging people to get involved after the success of the last poll and it made a massive impact through the volume of supporters and the publicity it received, forcing the government to listen.

Fair Fuel UK's Latest Update

FFUK have updated their followers via email with the results of the poll compiled with the Daily Telegraph on the high prices of fuel (particular at motorway service stations).

Service stations are often selling their petrol at 10p per litre higher than other service stations and the poll has shown that 26% of the 21,000 people who took part in the survey use motorway service stations to fill up less than last year due to rising prices. More worryingly, 81% of people who answered the poll said that they were cutting back on other aspects of their lives to be able to afford fuel.

According to the RAC, the cost of fuel is the number 1 concern for drivers in the UK and the UK is not alone with this concern. After the price rigging controversy within the oil market, the USA is calling out for a more in depth investigation and more transparency in fuel duty prices. The next step from FFUK is to wait for feedback from the HM Treasury on their view of whether fuel duty is a safe way to boost the economy and the results from the EU raid of oil companies and price manipulation.

Market Manipulation Suspicion on Oil Prices

Fair Fuel UK have revealed that EU competition authorities have ‘raided’ some of the offices of Oil companies and offices that contain Oil price information on the suspicion that the figures have been manipulated.

The EU investigation is trying to analyse whether we have been ripped off for fuel over the years or not. The much anticipated result of this investigation is still unknown but it shows the urgency for the truth in how the Oil market is run. If it is uncovered that Oil companies have been fabricating fuel prices then it will result in a huge scandal as the banks will need to fix the LIBOR interest rate.

FFUK have been recently campaigning to stop the increase and promote a decrease of the price of fuel duty. The campaign is supported by over 365,000 members of the public and business such as the RHA and FTA.

Fuel Duty Increase Shelved After Budget Yesterday

Yesterday the new budget for 2013 was announced by the chancellor George Osborne, revealing that there the proposed 3ppl fuel duty increase in September has been dropped.

Osborne claims that he had “listened” to the growing demands from PetrolPromise.com and the increasingly popular campaign from FFUK. Osborne said that due to the freeze of fuel duty increase over the last two years, the UK’s fuel is 13ppl cheaper than it would have been without the freeze. That equates to around £6bn in tax revenue not being charged.

The budget results have been applauded by FFUK, saying it is a great achievement in the fight to cut fuel duty. Quentin Wilson, FFUK spokesman said that the next step after ensuring fuel duty doesn’t climb, is to start cutting fuel prices. UK hauliers have complained that UK diesel prices are still the highest in Europe. RHA chief executive said “We want the next step to be cutting the price of diesel”.

FFUK Stepping Up a Gear in Preparation for the Budget

The new budget is fast approaching on March 20th and Fair Fuel UK is contacting supporters to show their support. MP’s will be metting at Westminster on March 4th and FFUK are encouraging the public to enter their details into a database that will send an email to their local MP about cutting the price of fuel duty. The target of this stratgey is to get as many MPs at this meeting as possible to have an effect on the results of the budget.

FFUK achieved a 1p cut in fuel duty last year, which is a small step but was a huge leap for FFUK and for the public with the increasing costs of fuel. FFUK have also managed to prevent a 9p fuel rise over the last two years. From the FFUK poll, the results illustrated that “Over 70% of members of the public and businesses said they would spend more on essentials (e.g. food) and spend more in shops generally, thereby stimulating economic growth” said FFUK, not only decreasing the price of fuel but also giving a much needed boost to our economy.
